Project overview

Scope & delivery

Euthenics was retained to perform an emergency inspection and evaluation of the Greens of Strongsville Culvert after the City's inspector discovered significant deterioration of the top slab in a portion of the cast-in-place section of the culvert. The culvert consisted of a 5-foot by 10-foot precast and cast-in-place reinforced concrete culvert approximately 700 feet long that crosses under S.R. 82 and the adjacent drive and parking lot of several commercial businesses. Euthenics' initial evaluation determined that the top slab had failed in a section of the culvert and recommended that the City move forward with emergency repair plans. Euthenics prepared emergency repair plans consisting of a series of bents made up of wide-flange steel members supporting the top slab at regular intervals. Euthenics provided construction observation services during the emergency repair. Hydraulic analysis of the culvert, including modeling with the bents installed, indicated a higher-than-desirable headwater elevation; therefore, immediate replacement was recommended. Euthenics continued regular inspections of the existing culvert to monitor the failed structure for further deterioration while developing final plans for a replacement culvert on another alignment. Euthenics performed hydraulic analysis for several culvert configurations on various horizontal and vertical alignments and developed final plans for the preferred replacement alternative, a 5-foot by 10-foot precast reinforced concrete box culvert with a full-height cast-in-place headwall at the outlet. An emergency dissipation pool lined with Type A Rock Channel Protection grouted in place was designed to mitigate high velocity that could cause downstream channel erosion at the culvert outlet.
